About Dairy Australia (DA)

Dairy Australia is the national services body for the dairy industry. It is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that is funded by a levy paid by dairy farmers with matching payments from the Australian government for research and development activities. With an annual budget of $55-60 million and approximately 150 staff, Dairy Australia is committed to helping farmers adapt to a changing operating environment and achieving a profitable, sustainable dairy industry. The organisation acts as the ;investment arm of the industry, investing in projects that can’t be done efficiently by individual farmers or companies.

The Group Manager Farm Profitability and Capability (FP and C) is a pivotal role in the organisation and is responsible for ensuring that DA’s strategic initiatives are delivered in accessible and pragmatic ways to producers, that drive real improvements in farm profitability and the capability of the dairy industry workforce. With a national team of 75 staff in both head office and regional locations and a budget of over $20m p/a, the role also acts as a 2IC for the MD in respect of public appearances, industry events and meetings, conferences and media representation.

The role is responsible for five primary deliverables:

1. Ensuring that the research and development initiatives conducted by DA and its joint venture partners translate into real outcomes on the farm in terms of profitability, competitiveness and sustainability
2. Building the capability of the current and future workforce for the industry
3. Provide high quality, high value services to the industry to support farm performance
4. Contributing to the future strategic direction of Dairy Australia and be a thought leader and champion for key issues facing farmers and that support the global competitiveness and viability of the industry
5. Promoting the Dairy Industry and the work of DA in building global competitiveness with all key stakeholders (Farmers and producers, Federal and State governments, Academic Institutions and relevant international bodies)

DA is searching for a highly credible candidate with deep experience in developing and implementing Research, Development and Extension programs to industry, a unique person, who is:

  • Passionate about the dairy industry and driving innovation
  • Strong people leader with the ability to inspire, motivate and focus large, regionally distributed teams
  • Highly commercial outlook, with the ability to quantify the impact of initiatives on farm profitability
  • Empathetic about the challenges faced by dairy farmers in respect to market pricing, climatic conditions and social licence
  • Strongly driven to deliver practical and impactful solutions to the industry
  • Highly collaborative and determined to work with all parties for the best possible solution
  • Demonstrates genuine humility in interactions with others
  • Ability to understand and navigate a complex and evolving political and industry landscape

Qualifications and Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in agricultural science or related scientific discipline
  • Deep experience in the agricultural sector, preferably with a strong research and development background
  • Strong understanding of the issues facing the dairy industry and farmers
  • Experience in leading large, multi-disciplinary teams
  • Credibility in representing the Industry’s innovation agenda to all relevant parties

Highly commercial in outlook with experience in working with investors and commercial partners to ensure the delivery of ROI from R and D activities:

  • Experience in working with farmers, understanding their needs and optimising the adoption of research innovation at the farm gate.
  • A personal and or professional history that demonstrates empathy for the values and challenges faced by the rural sector

The hay and grain report is commissioned by Dairy Australia to provide an independent and timely assessment of hay and grain markets in each dairying region. The report is updated 40 weeks per year.
