Stepping Up and Stepping Back - transition and succession planning

Dairy offers a lifelong career with a real sense of value, purpose, flexibility, stimulating work and work / life balance.

Many employees aim and succeed in buying a dairy farm or land, growing their business to employee people and being highly successful business owners. As in most industries, many dairy farm owners and managers are aging and considering their options to scale down their involvement or "step back" from the day to day of the business.

This opens up a range of opportunities for both groups to consider including share farming, leasing, selling, scaling back or expanding operations and business partnership models.

Knowing where to begin and understanding what the options are can seem overwhelming. A good place to start is reading more about share farming, leasing, and shared equity arrangements as options if you are looking to "step up" from an employee and "step back" as a farm owner.
