Dairy Australia - Dairy information for Australian Dairy Farmers and the industry

Primary content

We are working with milk companies to develop an industry sustainability reporting framework to help build the sustainability of dairy products and supply chains.

Sustainability reporting

Many dairy companies in Australia and internationally are experiencing pressure from their customers (retailers, major food processors such as Kraft) to report on the sustainability of their products and supply chains. One key driver is demand from customers who are increasingly wanting more supply chain (on farm/ off farm) sustainability information.

Dairy Australia is working with milk companies to develop an industry sustainability reporting framework that meets stakeholder'€™s needs. A key requirement is to ensure selected sustainability indicators are clear, measurable, defendable and easily collated without significant cost and time burdens on farmers and processors.

It is highly likely the sustainability reporting framework will draw on existing environmental tools and programs such as DairySAT and Dairying Better n' Better.

Dairy Self Assessment Tool (DairySAT)

Dairy Self Assessment Tool (DairySAT) is an environmental self-assessment tool for Australian dairy farms developed for dairy farmers by dairy farmers. DairySAT enables farmers and the broader dairy industry to:

  • Understand the environmental issues facing dairy farming
  • Benchmark on-farm environmental practices with best practice
  • Identify the most critical environmental issues on the farm
  • Know the legal and industry requirements in relation to environmental best practice
  • Understand key issues and identify sources of information and contacts

How to use DairySAT:

1) DairySAT has colour-coded sections for each environmental issue (left of screen)
2) Click on an issue (ie 'Fertilisers'€™), then launch the DairySAT tool at right of screen
3) After completing each section, check your results by clicking on '€œview my results'€.

Please note - DairySAT was not designed to give you the answers. It'€™s a tool that helps you identify problems, assess where you are in relation to the rest of the industry, and provide you with the resources to answer your questions.

The legal requirements and key contacts sections are relevant for Victoria only. Updated legal requirement and key contact sections for Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and NSW will be available shortly

Our Farm, Our Plan

Our Farm, Our Plan is a new program designed to equip farmers to clarify their long term goals, identify the actions needed and to manage uncertainty and risk.

Hay and grain reports

The hay and grain report is commissioned by Dairy Australia to provide an independent and timely assessment of hay and grain markets in each dairying region. The report is updated 40 weeks per year.
