Murray Dairy's primary funding is received from Dairy Australia from the total Dairy Australia budget including levy funds. Funding is distributed between the eight Regional Development Programs (RDP) across Australia based on the proportion of milk produced in that region (based on a rolling three year average).

Dairy farmers' milk is levied at 0.315 cents per litre or $3,150 for every million litres of milk produced. This levy funds a range of services including research, development, extension and the promotion and protection of the dairy industry’s interests within Australia and internationally. For every $1 of dairy levy funding, a further $4.50 of funds are sourced via partnerships, government and non-government organisations including Natural Resources Management (NRM) bodies and the Geoffrey Gardiner Foundation.
